Questions About Your Heating or Cooling System? Find Answers in Our Troubleshooting Tips and FAQs

Heating and cooling systems are complex, so when they struggle or stop working, it’s hard to know exactly why. Fortunately, our experts have answers to the questions our customers ask most often. If you’re curious about why your air conditioner has ice on it or how to lower your energy bills, keep reading—then call if you have any additional questions. Our technicians are here to help whenever you need us.

Why is my thermostat screen blank?
It may be as simple as dead batteries in your thermostat. If replacing the batteries doesn’t bring it back online, your circuit breaker might be tripped or there may be a problem with your furnace or air conditioner. Give us a call at 414-764-4700 (Oak Creek) or 262-534-5568 (Waterford)—one of our professional technicians will come out as soon as possible to test, reset, or repair as needed.
Why isn’t my system heating or cooling like it used to?
Start by checking your filter. If it’s gray and has an obvious buildup of dust, pet hair, and more, it needs to be replaced. This should improve airflow when done at the recommended intervals, but we also recommend annual system maintenance to help your system run safely and efficiently, with fewer repairs.
My heat just went out during a snowstorm—can I fix it?
Check the plastic heat vent pipe located outside of your home—light, fluffy snow can float in and clog the pipe. (Heavy, packing snow typically does not cause this issue.)
What should I do if my air conditioner has ice on it or is leaking water?
The biggest contributing factor to this problem is a dirty filter. Replace your filter, but call our experienced technicians if this doesn’t resolve the issue in a day or two. You may need a new part or repair to get your family back to cool comfort.
Does it really matter which brand or model of system I buy? Aren’t they all the same?
Not all systems are created equal—especially when it comes to efficiency and reliability. We prefer and recommend Carrier® heating and cooling systems, and guarantee the right size and a perfect installation to fit your home.
Is it true that R-22 (Freon) refrigerant is no longer available?
R-22 refrigerant is still available, but no longer being produced because it is harmful to the earth’s ozone. The limited supply means R-22 costs are rising, so you may find the cost to recharge an older unit is no longer practical. Depending on the age of your A/C, we may recommend that you put your money toward a newer air conditioner that uses a new refrigerant that’s safer, environmentally friendly, and more cost-effective. Plus, upgrading to a new energy-efficient air conditioner will save you even more on monthly cooling costs.
What are some easy ways to save on heating and cooling bills?
Energy-efficient equipment, annual maintenance and cleanings, and regular filter replacements are simple ways to minimize energy usage. But the factor that impacts your home’s efficiency the most—for a small investment—is insulation. Don’t overlook this update—insulation loosens and breaks down over time, so it’s important to have yours evaluated if your energy bills are on the rise.
